Statement: London Luton Airport expansion

Leader of North Herts Council, Elizabeth Dennis said: "We are deeply disappointed by the decision of the Secretaries of State for Levelling Up, Housing and Communities, and the Under Secretary of State at the Department for Transport, to expand the current capacity of London Luton Airport from 18 to 19 million passengers per annum (mppa). This decision flies in the face of public opposition, and completely ignores the climate emergency.

“We remain very concerned at the further expansion of the airport, giving rise to greater carbon emissions, noise, air pollution and traffic congestion. We are not persuaded that the mitigations proposed are adequate or sufficient to meet our climate responsibilities, and our offer to codesign solutions with Luton remains open. Together with Hertfordshire County Council and our neighbouring authorities, we continue to oppose the further expansion of the airport to 32 mppa through the ongoing examination process."
