North Herts wildflower beds look blooming lovely this July

Wildflowers in Baldock

PR Date: Friday, 9 July 2021 - 10:45am

A burst of summer colour has brought some much needed cheer to roadside flower beds in Letchworth, Baldock, Hitchin and Royston.

Nectar rich wildflowers have been sown by North Herts District Council’s (NHDC) grounds contractor John O’Conner, and will provide food for bees, butterflies and other insects, as well as seeds for birds to feed on at the end of the season.

Flowers including borage, poppy, sunflower, dill, strawflower, sweet alyssum, dwarf lupin and gloriosa daisy have been sown at the following sites:

  • Letchworth Gate, running alongside Radburn Way in Letchworth Garden City
  • B656/Letchworth Road at Baldock, opposite the entrance to Avenue Park and Weston Way
  • Alongside Cambridge Road, Hitchin
  • Alongside London Road (A10), Royston, adjacent to the bus station

The wildflower beds are part of NHDC’s commitment to help local biodiversity and fight climate change, following on from a successful trial of wildflower beds in 2019.

NHDC has also worked in partnership with the North Herts Beekeepers Association to sow bee friendly wildflower seeds in four beds on Cambridge Road, Hitchin.

Cllr Steve Jarvis, NHDC Executive Member for Environment said, “Not only do the wildflowers look stunning, but they will assist with carbon off setting near busy roads and help to feed local pollinating insects. Thank you to the North Herts Beekeepers Association for working with us on the Hitchin wildflower beds, and we look forward to sowing more sites like these next year.”
